You find a job that aligns with your skillset. The comp is good, but the title is at a lower level than it should be. Proceed with Caution! 🛑

There are many reasons why this may happen, but I believe the top three are:

  • Companies can then pay you less in the long run.

  • Companies can make you look less desirable for companies in your industry to poach.

  • OR companies simply don’t know and aren’t aligned with what the job title should accurately be for the position they are hiring for.

Suppose you take an opportunity that does not align with your actual responsibilities. If you ever look to work elsewhere, you may encounter obstacles in your job search.

Titles DO carry weight at the end of the day.

As an Executive Recruiter, assumptions about what someone knows or has experienced and their job title can be part of the equation when considering and contacting them for a new opportunity.

Suppose you accept a title that is less than the work you are executing and responsible for.  Then, you could be missing out on higher-level opportunities that I have in my back pocket.

So, think twice before accepting a role and compromising on a title unless you know that and are comfortable with accepting and understanding the whole picture.

Ask yourself: Will accepting this title help or negatively impact me in the long run?
