In my experience, there are 3 primary reasons why people leave jobs:

Toxic Leadership

There’s a famous saying, “People don’t quit jobs; they quit bosses” for a reason.

Toxic leadership affects not only performance but also mental health.  People will and do walk away from companies that don’t support them and/or create toxic work environments.

No Opportunity for Career Growth

Sometimes, we reach the ceiling of growth at a particular company.  Whether it be in:

→ Title

→ Responsibilities

→ Learning Opportunities

Top-performing leaders want to continue to rise. If they feel trapped at a certain level, it’s time to move on.

Low Pay

I firmly believe that companies that invest financially in the happiness of their employees see stronger retention.

As an executive recruiter, I always present opportunities to passive candidates. I can tell you right now if a high-achieving executive is presented with an opportunity to earn a significantly higher salary - they are open to discussions.

If you are currently employed and feeling unsatisfied with your current situation, I’d encourage you to see if that unhappiness falls into these categories.

There’s a chance that you don’t need to “stick it out” or settle for stagnation.

You deserve to feel supported at your company; if you do not, perhaps it’s time to move on.
